Computer repair, network survey and iPads

Computer repair and maintainance

During my stay I have been doing some computer repair and maintenance on various machines.

On one occasion I were tasked with swapping out the HDD's in the library computers with SSD's. The difference in these is that HDD's have a disk that spins around several thousand times per minute that a moving head writes to. They have a massive storage capability, some up to 12TB (Terrabyte, aprox. 12000GB), but given that they have moving parts they can easily damage if they were to be bumped too hard.
SSD's have no moving parts and can therefore be a bit safer and even faster alternative. The only downside is that as of right now they're not able to store as much data as an single HDD can.

Another task that I got done today as of writing this (Fri. 01.11.2019) were to do some checkups on a couple of computers in the ICT rooms where students come to use the computers during classes. A lot of the fans were having noise issues regarding the side fan. I had tried spraying them with WD40 to see if that would help but it didn't. In the end we then decided to simply unplug the fans. Given as it's a fairly general fan it shouldn't cause any problems and there are plans to replace the machines eventually anyway so we figured they would just have to do for now.

Network survey

Week 44 has been fairly calm as the school's students were having their half term break. During this time we took the opportunity to go into every classroom in the school over a couple of days to test and make notes of what switch all the network points are hooked up to at what port. To do this we use a measuring device made to test the connection and see what is on the other end if there is anything. It is also capable of testing cables to see if they're in an okay condition and how they are buildt up based on the signals it outputs.

iPads

On the first day of half term that began on Thursday of week 43 we got the iPads that are gonna be distributed out to the students of the school. The order contained right around 300 iPads and was delivered in a total of 71 boxes that we and the BCS site team had to carry up to the ICT suite (the English acronym for Norway's IKT).

For now we are waiting for the cases and pens that are gonna be delivered before we can prepare all the pads.
